Agnone wafers
The stuffed wafers of Agnone are a typical Christmas confectionery speciality, a tradition of the ancient Samnite town in the province of Isernia. It was in Agnone, in a Benedictine convent, that a knight errant found hospitality, and during his stay he narrated his battles with such pride that he offended the monks' lifestyle. Repentant, he asked the Poor Clares to prepare a cake as a sign of apology: thus, according to tradition, filled wafers were born.
The great cultural value of the Agnone wafers was also recognised by Pope John Paul II, who, on a visit to Agnone, was able to appreciate the goodness of this unique and ancient recipe.
